Mile 0

 

Mile 0 of the Trans-Canada highway in British Columbia begins in Victoria, at the south end of Douglas Street at the intersection with Dallas Road.  They have erected a sign here “Mile 0”.  From this point you are overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, USA.

 

Although the highway runs north and south on the island it is the western terminus of the Trans-Canada highway.  The island’s eastern end (really north end) of the portion of the highway ends in the BC Ferry terminal at Departure Bay in Nanaimo.  The highway continues east on the mainland from the Horseshoe bay terminal.  It is 70 miles (113 Km) to the east (really north) end on the Highway at Departure Bay in Nanaimo.

 

 

 

 

7 blocks – Junction with Highway 17 – Angle to the right at this junction will take you up Highway 17 to Sidney & Swartz Bay to the Washington State and BC ferries and Victoria International Airport.

8 blocksBellevelle Street – If you turn left here and go one block you will be a Victoria’s Inner Harbor.  On your left will be one of the finest museums in the world, on your right will be the Empress Hotel and Victoria Convention Center, in front of you on the right will be the Inner Harbor with its ferries, yachts, and aircraft, and in front of you on the left will be the Parliament Building and several Hotels.

 

 

Mile 2

You are in the heart of downtown Victoria on Blanchard Street

 

 

Mile 3

Cloverdale Avenue – Turn east (right if northbound) to access Highway 17 to Highway 17 to Sidney & Swartz Bay to the Washington State and BC ferries and Victoria International Airport.

 

Oak Bay shopping area is loading.........Mile 3.4 – (5.5 Km) Highway 1 turns west off of Douglas Street and becomes the Trans-Canada Highway.

Intersection with McKenzie Avenue – This street will take you east to connect with Highway 17 to Sidney & Swartz Bay to the Washington State and BC ferries and Victoria International Airport.

Old Island Highway / Burnside Rd / Colwood Interchange (Highway 1A) – Thetis Lake regional Park

Mile 9.3 / Exit 15 – (15 Km) Interchange with Millstream Road / Langford Area / City of Colwood is approximately 2.5 mi. (4 Km) to the south. 
 
Hospital 6 blocks south, turn left on Goldstream Ave, it will be on the right in about 1 block.  
 
Visitors Center for Colwood, Highlands, Langford, and Metchosin is located 6 blocks south of exit at the intersection of Millstream Road and Goldstream Ave.

   -   The Town of Mill Bay to the east has a population of 950. 

   -   West is the Town of Shawnigan Lake population of 1000 on the

         shore of Shawnigan Lake

 

Here Highway 1 descends into the Cowichan Valley which is one of two main agricultural valleys on Vancouver Island.

City of Duncan Pop. 4,600.  This city is the main center for the Cowichan Valley’s population of around 74,000 residents of which around 3,000 are members of the Cowichan Tribe.

Highway 18 to Lake Cowichan / Maple Bay / Crofton.  The ferry to Saltspring Island leaves from Crofton.

A Chemainus wall mural is loading.......Town of Chemainus is a little over a mile (2 Km) east of the highway, has a Pop. 3,900, and overlooks Stuart Channel and Thetis Island.   There is a ferry from here to Thetis and Kuper Islands.  This Town is a “can’t miss” tourist destination with its quaint shops and many wall murals.

The Town of Ladysmith has a Population of about 6,500.  Ladysmith lies on the 49th Parallel, the border between the United States and Canada.  The boundary curves below the island through the main channels and out the Strait of Juan de Fuca keeping all of Vancouver Island in Canada.

Cedar Rd / Yellowpoint Rd. – Cedar is a bedroom community to the southeast of Nanaimo

Highway 19 East to Duke Point – Ferry Terminal for Nanaimo to Tsawwassen (they call it Vancouver) ferry.

Junction with Highway 19 west (Nanaimo Parkway) which diverts through traffic around downtown Nanaimo.  This is the beginning of the Inland Island Highway

Nanaimo City Center – The City of Nanaimo has a population of over 70,000 and is Vancouver Island’s busiest port

Departure Bay Ferry Terminal of BC Ferries.  Ferries leave here for Horseshoe  Bay on the mainland were Highway 1 continues east.
