A map is loading.......Highway 19 begins south of Nanaimo at the Duke Point Ferry Terminal of BC Ferries.  The road from here to the Ferry terminal is both Highway 1 and Highway 19.  Highway 19 bypasses downtown Nanaimo and heads inland, away from the shore of the Strait of Georgia.

Hence, the highway is called the “Bypass” by some locals and is formally named the Island Inland Highway”.

This highway is the fastest way to get up-island to Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Courtenay, Comox, and Campbell River.  This limited access highway is built for speed and bypasses the tourist facilities and views offered by the “Oceanside Route” Highway 19A.

In general there are no facilities at the exits on this highway, you must leave the highway and go into the towns for facilities.
