the north and south arms of the Fraser River. The west side of Lulu Island faces the
Strait of Georgia. Steveston is

Steveston
is located in the southwest corner of Lulu Island on the South Arm of the
Fraser River where the River enters the Strait of Georgia.
The basis of Steveston’s economy for the last
100 years has been the fishing industry.
Today the fishing industry is all but gone and tourism is now the
Village’s main industry.

A little of
Steveston’s History
Steveston was originally a farming community. In 1880 William Steves bought land and
began to develop a town site. In
1882 a salmon cannery was built in Steveston. By 1890 Steveston had 15 canneries and a
large fishing fleet.
|
|
In 1901 a record 16 million pounds of Salmon
were shipped world-wide from Steveston.
In that era Steveston had an opera house, gambling, opium dens,
houses of ill repute, several hotels, and several saloons servicing a
population that swelled to 10,000 during fishing season.
Even though the
importance of the fishing industry has diminished over the last quarter
century Steveston is still the home of the largest commercial fishing fleet
in Canada with over 600 vessels.
Steveston’s Attractions
In 1989 Carry Point
Park opened on the southwestern corner of Lulu Island at the west end of
Steveston. There are picnic tables,
paths, open area to fly kits in the winds off the Strait of Georgia, and
most importantly boat watching of the boat traffic up and down the Fraser
Valley.
The Waterfront
The hub of Steveston is
the waterfront. It has a wood
planked riverfront boardwalk lined with restaurants and shops. In fishing season you can purchase fresh
seafood and fish right from the decks of the fishing boats.
On a hot day you will
find ice cream and beverages and on a cool day you can find hot coffee and
cozy restaurants.
