BC-GVancouver01.jpgPort Coquitlam

The City of Port Coquitlam is located on the west bank of the confluence of the Pitt River and the Fraser River.  Port Coquitlam lies east of Coquitlam and is a separate city.

Don’t be misled by the City’s name, Port Coquitlam is not a port district highly involved in shipping via ocean freighter.  There are no docks for ships in Port Coquitlam

If you look at a map of the city most of the waterfront is designated as park or residential lands, not industrial.  However, one of Port Coquitlam’s largest facilities is the Canadian Pacific rail yards that run for about 2 miles (3.2 Km) along the south side of the Lougheed Highway (BC-7).

Port Coquitlam is located in the yellow area labeled Coquitlam left of center in the bottom map to the left.  Port Coquitlam is located in the southeast corner of the area across the Pitt River from Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge.  In the southwest portion of the City it is across the Fraser River from Surrey.

Port Coquitlam is bounded on the south by the Fraser River on the east by the Pitt River, on the west by the Coquitlam River and on the north by the Coast Mountain Range.

You will find nearly all of the shopping opportunities in Port Coquitlam along the Lougheed Highway and south of the Lougheed Highway on Shaughnessy Street.

In recent years Port Coquitlam has experienced substantial commercial growth.  They have a new shopping area called the Dominion Triangle which is on the north side of the Lougheed Highway, north of the CP rail yard near the eastern border of the city.

There are four shopping areas in Port Coquitlam;

   Dominion Triangle – Lougheed Highway and Dominion Avenue

   PoCo Place mall – 2755 Lougheed Highway (Westwood & Lougheed Highway)

                                     (located at the west city limit)

   The downtown core – Shaughnessy Street & McAllister Avenue)

    Northside commercial area – Along Prairie Avenue (north of Lougheed Highway)

A little History of Port Coquitlam

Before 1913 when Port Coquitlam was incorporated there were two Coquitlams.  The rural Coquitlam was the entire area shown as Coquitlam.  Inside of Coquitlam was a new industrial area surrounding the Pacific Coast terminal of the Canadian Pacific Railroad.  On April 18, 1913 the City of Port Coquitlam was incorporated.

The Canadian Pacific Railroad had moved its west coast terminal from Vancouver to this location only two years earlier because of the availability of flat land for their switching yard and growth potential for industry.  The industry and port facilities never came to Port Coquitlam.  Instead, most of the growth in the area in the first half of the 20th Century was residential, much of it from railroad, quarry, and mental health workers. Since the 1950’s Port Coquitlam has seen slow but steady industrial growth

At the end of World War II the population was about 1,500.  By 1952 the population had doubled and by 1960 the population was over 8,000. Today (2008) the population is in the neighborhood of 60,000.
