BC-GVancouver01.jpgNorth Vancouver

North Vancouver is the name of a city and a district along the north shore of Burrard Inlet, north of Vancouver British Columbia, Canada.  On this site we are going to cover both as one entity rather than trying to separate them.

The District of North Vancouver runs from the Lions Gate Bridge east to Indian Arm. Indian Arm is the body of water to the east of the North Shore in the map to the left.  It is a 12 mile long Fjord that runs north into the coastal mountains from Burrard Inlet.

The City of North Vancouver is on Burrard Inlet and is surrounded on the other three sides by the District of North Vancouver.

Both North and West Vancouver are located on Vancouver’s North Shore.  The North Shore is shown in golden yellow at the top left of the bottom map to the left.

West of the Lions Gate Bridge, which crosses the Burrard Inlet from Stanley Park to the middle of the North Shore, is West Vancouver.

The District of North Vancouver is bounded by Indian Arm (a salt water fjord) on the east, the coastal mountains to the north, the Capilano River to the west (near the Lions Gate Bridge), and Burrard Inlet to the south.

North Vancouver is only separated from the City of Vancouver by about 5,000 feet or one mile (1.6Km).  That 5,000 feet is the width of Burrard Inlet at the First Narrows (Stanley Park)  In 1938 Lions’ Gate Bridge opened with three lanes of traffic crossing from Stanley Park to North Vancouver.  Approximately 70,000 vehicles a day cross this bridge.  The development of the bridge spurred development of the North Shore.

North Shore Main Attractions

Beside the shopping opportunities in North Vancouver there are also two other “must see” attractions in the area, the Capilano Bridge and the Grouse Mountain Skyride.

The Capilano Bridge is a 450 foot long suspended foot passenger bridge 300 feet above the Capilano River.  The bridge is just part of an attraction park that includes a treetop adventure with suspended walkways and tree houses at tree top level.  There are also totem poles and carvers and other displays.  For more information see their listing in “Recommended Attractions” below.

The Grouse Mountain Skyride is worth the price of admission if you only go up and turn around and come back down but that isn’t the end of the story.  In the winter there is a world class ski village at the top of the ride and when the snow melts for the summer there are activities for the tourist which include a restaurants including world class fine dining, a lumberjack show with three shows each afternoon, a birds in motion demonstration with falcons, eagles, owls, and hawks showing their flying skills, and the Theatre in the Sky, Canada’s first high-definition electronic cinema with a presentation every hour.  For more information see their listing in “Recommended Attractions” below.

How do I get to North Vancouver?

There are three way to get to North Vancouver.  The first is over the Lions Gate Bridge from Stanley Park in downtown Vancouver.  The second way is via the SeaBus passenger ferry from downtown Vancouver, and the third way is via the Trans-Canada Highway-1 over the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Bridge.

The North Shore

The City of North Vancouver, The District of North Vancouver, and West Vancouver have a lot in common in that all three are on the north shore of Burrard Inlet and located on the southern slopes of the Coast Mountains.  Many locals just call the area the “North Shore.”  The area is known for its high end view residences.
