BC-GVancouver01.jpgWest Vancouver

West Vancouver, BC is a Municipality on the lower mainland of British Columbia, Canada.  It is actually north and northwest of the City of Vancouver, BC.

West Vancouver is separated from the City of Vancouver by the Burrard Inlet.  The main access to West Vancouver from Vancouver is BC Highway-99 over the Lions Gate Bridge and Canada Highway-1 via the Simon Fraser Bridge.

West Vancouver consists of the west end, from the Lions Gate Bridge to Horseshoe Bay, of the North Shore region as shown on our lower BC Mainland map to the left.  The North Shore is shown in golden yellow in the upper left of the bottom map.  You can see where Stanley Park nearly crosses Burrard Inlet creating the First Narrows, Lion’s Gate.  To the left of this point is West Vancouver.

West Vancouver has almost no flat lands.  The Coastal Mountains come right down to the shore in most of West Vancouver is built on hillsides.  That means the real estate in North Vancouver is nearly all view property.  That means that the real estate in the city is nearly all high end.

In general North Vancouver is a quite community due to the nature of the terrain.  It has two main commercial areas, one at each end of the municipality.  It is traversed by only two thoroughfares, Marine Drive and Highway-1, and almost all other streets are dead end or loops.

A tour of West Vancouver

If you access West Vancouver over the Lions Gate Bridge you will find the highway does a full circle at the north end of the bridge.  Keep right around this circle and you will access Marine Drive, westbound.

Mile – 0 – Lions Gate Bridge

You will first go over a bridge that crosses the Capilano River.  At the west end of the bridge you will find Park Royal Shopping center on both sides of the road.  Park Royal is a regional shopping center with 280 stores and restaurants.

Mile – 1

Travel a bit further and you will find yourself in the community of Ambleside.  This small community with a traditional downtown area is known for its antique and craft stores.

Mile – 2

A bit further down Marine Drive you will find yourself in Dundarave.  It is know for its boutiques and galleries.  If you turn south on 18th street in Ambleside you will find yourself at the Seawall walk that will take you from Ambleside to Dundarave along the shore.

Mile – 3 thru 6

The highway follows the rugged coastline along the north shore in mainly residential areas

Mile 6.7 – Lighthouse Park – This 185 acre (75 hectare) park features a lighthouse built in 1912 and some buildings from World War II near it display the importance of this place in WWII.  For more information see Recommended Parks below.

The park marks the end of Burrard inlet and the beginning of Howe Sound.

Mile – 7 thru 9

Marine Drive heads north along the shore of the mouth of Howe Sound.  Because of the ruggedness of the coast the road isn’t very close to the water.  The area is mainly residential until you get to the tourist facilities of the Horseshoe Bay Community.

Mile – 10 – Horseshoe Bay

Horseshoe Bay is a unique community.  The Trans-Canada Highway-1 terminates in the ferry terminal.  If you want to go to Horseshoe Bay via Highway-1 make sure to take the Sea-to-Ski highway exit to Whistler and then turn left at the first intersection.

The BC Ferry terminal takes up the whole north side of Horseshoe Bay and a marina covers the south side of this small bay.  The terminal is a hub of activity.  Along the shore south of the terminal West Vancouver has built a waterfront park.  Opposite the park are restaurants and shopping.  Outside of the activity at the ferry terminal and downtown the Community of Horseshoe Bay is a quiet community surrounded by hills with upscale homes.
