A little area
history
The area around Seabrook was the center of attention for
ocean beach vacations from the turn of the century through the 1920’s. The Northern Pacific Railroad put a rail
line from Aberdeen
to Moclips. Throngs of vacationers
arrived by rail in the area and hotels and other accommodations were built to
take care of the vacationers every need.
Fires and storms took their toll in the facilities in the
area but the real blow was the crash of 1929 which took the heart out of the
American economy and most people didn’t have the expendable income necessary
for vacations at the beach. Then World
War II came along and two factors spelled the death of the vacation business
in the area. First, the Navy arrived
and they literally took the area off of the maps and the population was busy
with the war effort. During this
period all of the facilities from that era disappeared from sight.

The Beach
The main draw to this area is the beach. The surf and the sand offer a Mecca for beach lovers.
There is also danger here.
This beach has hosted the hulls of probably a hundred ships and boats
that have run aground in Pacific storms.
Everything from four-masted schooners to modern steel ships have ended
up on this beach.
In recent years winter storm watching vacations have been
becoming more and more popular and this is a great place to see the high surf
roar in on the beach in the winter.
The New
Community of Seabrook
Considering the beauty of the ocean beaches it is amazing that
most of this area of the coast is underutilized. With a few exceptions, most of the tourist
facilities in the area are old, rundown, or were never up to today’s tourist
resort standards. Considering the
success of the 1960’s planned development of Ocean Shores
it is about time someone puts in a 21st Century ocean front
development.
We haven’t visited Seabrook yet. We plan to remedy that problem soon.
