Washington State

Where is Hood Canal?

Hood Canal is a Fjord over 50 miles long located in northwestern Washington State.  Hood Canal is on the east side of Washington’s famous Olympic Peninsula.

Hood Canal is part of Washington’s inland coastal waters.  It extends from Admiralty Inlet about 15 miles south of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  The Strait of Juan de Fuca is a 15 mile wide strait between Washington’s Olympic Peninsula and Canada’s Vancouver Island.

Hood Canal is roughly 20 miles west of Seattle.  The Kitsap peninsula separates Seattle and Puget Sound from the Hood Canal.  The cities of the Kitsap Peninsula include Bremerton, Poulsbo, Silverdale, Gig Harbor, Kingston, and Belfair.

The Canal goes in a south westerly direction west of Puget Sound and at the southern end turns east north east for 15 miles.  With its lack of cities and port facilities, Hood Canal is used mainly for recreational purposes.

There is a map of Hood Canal at the bottom of this page.
