The Snake
River
Clarkston is located at
the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater
rivers. The Snake River is navigational
water from Clarkston to the Pacific Ocean some 465 miles down the Snake and
Columbia Rivers.
Clarkston is in the Lewis-Clark Valley and is only 731 feet above
sea level so it has a moderate climate with mild winters. You will find a vast array of activities
in this area most of which revolve around the rivers.

Bridge over
the Snake River
|
Being 465 river miles
from the Pacific Ocean we did not expect
to see ocean going vessels. To our
surprise there was an ocean going commercial fishing boat in the boat basin
at Clarkston. The photo was taken
from Roosters, a restaurant where we had dinner that had a wonderful view
of the river and boat basin.
In the photo to the left
of the bridge over the Snake River in
Clarkston you see the sharp contrasts of the area. The beautiful lush bank foliage, the wide
river, and the steep rolling high desert hills.

Historic Downtown Clarkston.
Clarkston’s population is over 18,000 people and its sister city
across the Snake River, Lewiston,
has a population of around 30,000.
With a local population of
nearly 50,000 Clarkston offers the accommodations and attractions of a
larger city. Clarkston also is the
gateway to the Hells Canyon Recreation area. We have listed several tour companies
under attractions below.
