WA-Counties01-Columbia

Visitor information about the Dayton, WA area.  The City of Dayton, Washington is the county seat of Columbia County in southeast Washington State.  Columbia County is shown in red on the map to the left.

Dayton, Washington is in the Palouse.  The Palouse is an area in southwest Washington State made up of vast areas of steep rolling hills.  The native plant to these hills was bunch grass and originally it was thought the best use for the land was cattle grazing.

This area only gets about 16 inches of rainfall a year so most crops won’t grow.  However, the top soil here is deep, up to 100 feet thick and very rich.  It was discovered that winter wheat and some other grains will grow here.  Wheat has been the main crop here for about 150 years.

Lewis and Clark camped near Dayton on Patit Creek on their return trip from the Pacific Ocean in 1806.  In 1859 the first European Settlers arrived in the area.

The late 1800’s were a prosperous time in the area and many beautiful Victorian Homes were built in Dayton.  Around 90 of these homes are on the National Historic Register of Historic Places and Dayton has a walking tour of the houses.

Dayton’s courthouse was built in 1887 and it is the oldest working court house in Washington State.  It was recently full restored to its original beauty.

Dayton also has the oldest railroad station in Washington State.  It was built by the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company in 1881.  The Union Pacific Railroad donated the station to the Dayton Historical Society in 1975.  They have restored the depot to its original grandeur.
