The City of Pomeroy, WA is the county seat of Garfield County
in southwest Washington
State. Garfield County
is shown in red on the map to the left.
Pomeroy, Washington is in the Palouse. The Palouse is an area in southwest Washington State made up of vast areas of steep
rolling hills. The native plant to
these hills was bunch grass and originally it was thought the best use for
the land was cattle grazing.
This area only gets about
16 inches of rainfall a year so most crops won’t grow. However, the top soil here is deep, up to
100 feet thick and very rich. It was
discovered that winter wheat will grow here. Wheat has been the main crop here for
about 150 years.

The Snake River is the
northern border of Garfield
County and offers a
major recreation area to the region.
The Snake River is one of the largest rivers in the US. It runs 1000 miles from Yellowstone National
Park to the Columbia River
in the Tri-Cities area.
The dams on the river
form two lakes. Bryan Lake,
behind Little Goose Dam, is 37 miles long and Lower Granite
Lake, behind Lower
Granite Dam, is 39 miles long.
