WA-WineCountry-Yakima

The City of Sunnyside, WA is located in Yakima County in southwest Washington State.  Yakima County is in Washington’s Wine Country.  Yakima County is shown in yellow and the rest of wine country is shown in red on the Washington State map to the left.

 

Sunnyside is located in Interstate-82  around 35 mi. south of Yakima, WA.  It is also about 45 miles from the Tri-Cities area.

 

Sunnyside is also at the center of the hub from Portland, Seattle, and Spokane being about 180 miles away from each of them.

 

Sunnyside, WA is a small rural community in the lower Yakima Valley.  Yakima Valley is a very diverse agricultural area in south central Washington State.  Sunnyside was incorporated on September 16, 1902. 

 

According to the City’s web site the City has an estimated population of around 14,000 and a population of 75,000 within a 15 mile radius of the city.  Over the last 10 years the area has experienced unprecedented economic growth and population increase.

The giant red wagon above welcomes visitors to Sunnyside.  Sunnyside’s economic base is agriculture and you will find evidence of this everywhere as the grain storage facility attests to.

 

 

 

 

Darigold Visitor Center

Darigold has a visitor center at its cheese plant.  They have a plethora of dairy products available and fresh ice cream products.  They also have soup and sandwiches available for you.

Cheese Plant

Darigold operates one of the largest cheese plants in the United States in Sunnyside.  The plant produces 150 million pounds of cheese a year.  That translates to ten 40-foot trailer loads of cheese that leaves the plant every day, 365 days a year.

 

The photo shows the automated equipment that produces the cheese.  We only found 2 people working in the plant running all that automatic equipment
