WA-WineCountry-Franklin

Visitor Information for Pasco, WA.  Pasco, Washington is located in Wine Country in south central Washington State.  Pasco is in Franklin County.  Franklin County is shown in yellow and the rest of Wine Country is shown in red on the Washington State map to the left.

Pasco is one of the Tri-Cities.  The other two cities are Richland and Kennewick, WA.  They are called the Tri-Cities because they are all located in the same place on the Columbia River in southeast Washington State.

The cities of Richland and Kennewick are on the west bank of the Columbia and Pasco is located on the east bank.  Kennewick and Richland are in Benton County and Pasco is  in Franklin County because it is on the other side of the river.

Wine making and vineyards

The wine industry in Washington State continues to grow at an ever expanding rate.  Wine grapes are the second most important fruit crop in the area.

We have a whole page devoted to the Tri-City’s wine industry.

Visit our Tri-Cities Wine Page.

Demographics

Pasco has a population of about 39,000 people and the combined population of Pasco, Kennewick, and Richland is about 133,000 and the total population in Benton and Franklin Counties is around 153,000.  Pasco’s elevation is 360 feet above sea level.  It is located at the confluence of the Snake, Yakima, and Columbia Rivers in southeast Washington State.

Farmer’s Market

Pasco has a farmer’s Market that was first opened in 1985.  It is located at the corner of Columbia Street and 4th Avenue.  It claims to be the largest open air Farmer’s Market in the State.  It is open from May to November on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  It opens at 8 AM and closes when all the goods are sold, usually around noon.  We think it probably gets too hot.

Agriculture

We found the statistics on the crop yields in the area a surprise.  We thought wheat was king in Eastern Washington.  In the Tri-Cities area potatoes are the number one crop.

The top ten production crops are; potatoes, wheat, corn, sweet corn, dry onions, carrots, hay, asparagus, barley, and then oats.

The top fruits in order of production is apples, grapes, cherries, pears, and peaches.

A little History

The oldest known remains of man in the Western Hemisphere can be found in Northern Franklin County at Marmes Rock Shelter near Palouse Falls.  It seems the abundant fishing and mild climate has always attracted people to the area.

On October 16, 1805 everything changed forever in this area, The Lewis and Clark Expedition found the area and recorded its attributes.  That began the flood of settlement in this area.

The arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad into the area brought a rush of settlers.  In 1886 the

railroad town of Ainsworth was moved to Pasco, bringing with it the County Seat.

When Grand Coulee Dam was completed in 1941 it brought the stability irrigation and power to the region and was instrumental in the government deciding to place the atomic energy plant an Hanford.
