WA-WineCountry-Benton

Visitor Information about the Richland, WA area.

Richland, Washington is located in Wine Country in south central Washington State.  Richland is in Benton County.  Benton County is shown in yellow and the rest of Wine Country is shown in red on the Washington State map to the left.

Hanford

Originally Richland was owned by the US Government.  It was a department of defense facility housing employees who made the atomic bomb in World War II.

The Hanford Reservation is now a US Department of Energy facility.  It is located north of Richland.  Today the original reservation is cut in half.  The Hanford Reservation is about 25 mi. long and 10 miles wide between WA-240 and the west bank of the Columbia River.

The property west of WA-240 is now the Hanford Reach National Monument.  We have more information below under Recommended Parks.

Richland Today

Today there is little or nothing left of the rows of government built houses all exactly alike.  Richland has turned into the cultural center of the Tri-Cities with a symphony, ballet, three community theater troupes, medieval renaissance and folklife festivals, an annual classic car and street rod event and even world class wineries.

Richland has a population of just over 43,500 which tends to give the community a small town atmosphere.  However, the Tri-Cities area has a population in the 150,000 area so the Tri-Cities area has more attractions than any of the three cities could support on their own.

You will find Richland a unique and interesting city to explore.

You will find everything from fine dining restaurants in railroad dining cars and overlooking the Columbia River to the never ending stream of fast food restaurants in Richland.

They also have a 5-mile long walking, biking, and jogging trail along the river and challenging golf courses.  The waterfront along the Columbia River offers a marina, docks, and boat launches.
