Wine making
and vineyards
The wine industry in the Walla Walla, WA
area is not only alive and well, it continues to grow. The expertise in wine making in the area
runs from winemakers that grew up in the industry in France and California and bring generations of
knowledge to self taught winemakers who have learned through research,
trial, and error leading to new traditions in winemaking. We have a whole page dedicated to Walla Walla area
wines.

The Varied
Economy
Although agriculture is
the mainstay of the economy in the area, Walla Walla has two other major
components of its economy that are not weather dependent, the corrections
business and education.
The Washington State
Penitentiary is located in Walla
Walla.
Although not a visitor attraction, it houses around 2000 offenders,
has a staff of over 1000, and brings over $50 million to the local economy.
In 1859 a seminary was
established honoring the Whitman’s, missionaries that had been massacred in
1847.

In 1883 the Washington
State Legislature issued a new charger converting the seminary into a
college granting four year degrees. Today Whitman College
has around 1,500 undergraduate students.
It is a major factor in the economy and the social atmosphere of the
community.
Agriculture
Wheat and other grains
have always been on the top of the list for agricultural products grown in
the Walla Walla
area.
|
|
However, Walla Walla is famous for another
agricultural product that carries the area’s name, the Walla Walla Sweet
Onion. A French Soldier fount the
Italian sweet onion on the island
of Corsica and brought it to the Walla Walla Valley. The onion has been further cultivated for
size and sweetness over the generations in Walla Walla.
Museums
The Walla
Walla community has gone to great lengths to preserve its
history at the Fort
Walla Walla Museum. Many of the buildings, although not are
their original site, are original buildings from the fort.

Court House, shown above. To the
left is a close up of the statue of Columbus
that is on the front lawn. You also
shouldn’t miss the tallest building in town, the 13 story Marcus Whitman
Hotel that was new refirbushed.
