WA-WineCountry-Yakima

Visitor information for the Yakima Washington area.  Yakima, WA is located in south central Washington State.  Yakima is east of the Cascade Mountains.  Washingtonians call this area Eastern Washington.

Yakima lies east of Mount Rainier, the largest mountain in the state.  The eastern two thirds of Washington State is uniquely different from the western Washington coastal plain.  Eastern Washington lies east of the mountain range that holds the moisture from the Pacific Storms to the west.  That gives Eastern Washington a dryer, warmer climate in the tourist season and a colder and dryer climate in the winter months.

Yakima is the county seat of Yakima County.  In the map above Yakima County is shown in yellow and the rest of Washington’s Wine Country is shown in red.

The Yakima Valley produces the most apples, winter pears, hops and mint in the United States.  The economy centers around fruit in this region with other agricultural products running close behind.

The first thing you see on Interstate-82 when approaching from the north is the fruit stand shown above.  All of the fruit grown in the region is available at local fruit stands and you will get the pick of the crop in these friendly outlets.

The second thing you will see on I-82 is the bridges over the Yakima River with the main exit into Yakima onto First Avenue just across the bridge.

Yakima is the largest city in south central Washington.  Most of the cities in Washington’s Wine Country are full of one and two story buildings.  Yakima is one of the exceptions to the rule.

Yakima’s downtown mall has closed and the stores that were in the mall have moved south to Union Gap where there are several strip malls and Valley Mall, a regional shopping center.

Yakima continues to evolve and its Historic Front Street District in becoming a focus with its shops, restaurants, fine dining, wine shops, and pubs.

The Yakima Greenway wanders along the Yakima and Naches Rivers with its 10-mile long paved pedestrian trail.  It is shown in the photo to the left taken from the Oxford Suites Hotel east of

downtown.  You can see the baron hills of the high desert which surround Yakima in the background.

Although Yakima’s Northern Pacific Station now houses a restaurant, rail transportation is alive and well in the Yakima area.  The Yakima Electric Railway has a 5-mile long run between Yakima and Selah that runs through apple orchards and along basalt cliffs.

On its way to Selah it goes over the Naches River.  You will enjoy your trip aboard a 1930 Brill streetcar or one of their 1900s trolleys.

Don’t miss the Yakima Valley Museum.  It is located in Franklin Park.
