Many of the hills in the Yakima Valley are looking different.  The look of vineyards is replacing some of the fruit orchards.

Visitor information for the wineries located in the Yakima Valley AVA.  Washington State wines have attained international status in recent years.  The Wine Industry is growing by leaps and bounds in Washington State.

You can find lots of information about the wine industry written by professionals or connoisseurs.   We are first travelers and second wine consumers with the perspective of the occasional wine drinker.  We hope our perspective will be of help when you travel to Wine Country looking for an interesting winery to visit.

Yakima Appellation

The first wine appellation in Washington State was the Yakima Valley Appellation.

The Yakima Valley is located in south central Washington State on the east side of the Cascade Mountains.  The Yakima Valley Appellation or AVA (American Viticultural Area) authorized by the US Government, contains the valley and the hills that surround the valley.

Interstate-82 enters the appellation just north of Exit-40, South of Yakima and Union Gap.   I-82 runs right down the middle of the appellation.  I-82 leaves the appellation to the east of Benton City, just west of the I-82 / I-182 junction at I-82 Exit 102.

The Cascade Foothills are the western border of the appellation and the Kiona Hills near Richland are its eastern boundary.  Its northern boundary runs along the top of the ridge of the Rattlesnake Hills and across Ahtanum Ridge and its southern border is the 1000-foot contour line level of the Horse Haven Hills to the Toppenish Ridge.

Yakima County is shown in Yellow on the map above and the rest of Washington’s Wine Country is shown in red.

The Yakima Valley AVA is home to over 40 wineries and more than one-third, around 11,000 acres, of all the grapes grown in the State of Washington are grown in the Yakima Valley AVA

The wine industry is really only now coming of age in Washington State so you will find no grand old historic wineries.  What you will find is wineries and tasting rooms of all shapes and sizes in the Yakima Valley AVA.  Some are just old barns or packing sheds that have been “prettied” up a little bit and others have put more effort into

making their tasting room more appealing.  Although most tasting rooms don’t have the history or grandiose architecture you find from most of the facilities in California, you will find Washington’s winemakers work very hard to put a world class wine in their bottles.

The  array of awards held by wineries in the Yakima Valley AVA shows that world class vintners are busy with the Valley’s magnificent grape crops creating fine wines.

YakimaAVA-01

It is 150 miles from Seattle to Yakima,

155 miles from Spokane to Yakima, and

170 miles from Portland, OR to Yakima.

There are far too many wineries in the Yakima Valley AVA to visit them in only one day.  In fact, if you are going to drive and sample wines we would suggest that it will take about 10 days to visit all of the wineries.

Since very few of us have 10 days to spend tasting wines your biggest problem will be what wineries to visit on your visit.  We would suggest that, if you take small sips, you can visit a maximum of 4 wineries a day unless you have a designated driver or take one of the wine tours that provide a driver.

Since the Yakima Valley AVA was designated by the US Government two other AVA’s within the Yakima Valley AVA have been designated, the Rattlesnake Hills AVA and the Red Mountain AVA.
