Oregon’s Central Coast on the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway, US Highway-101.
Your first impression when you approach Depoe Bay from
the north will be of retail stores on the east side of the highway and
parking on the west side of the highway along the seawall above the rocky
shore of the bay.
The Harbor
On my first visit I was surprised to see a boat come out
of what seemed to be a hole in the rocks along the shore. Nature carved a small access in the rocks
to the smallest navigable harbor in the world, according to the locals. The
harbor lies inland on the east side of US Highway-101.
Don’t miss a trip down to the harbor. Not only do you get a great photo
opportunity of the bridge over the harbor inlet and if you are there at the
right time the sunset behind the bridge, you also get to visit a working
harbor loading tour boats and offloading tour boats and fish.
Whale Watching & Fishing
Depoe Bay is fortunate to have a resident Grey Whale pot
that spends about 10 months out of the year. Local tour guides leave just about hourly
to whisk you out to watch the whales.
