Springfield is located in central western Oregon. It is in the southern end of the Willamette River Valley one of the most fertile agricultural areas in the United States.

Where is Springfield, Oregon?

The easiest answer is to go to Eugene Oregon and turn east instead of turning west off of Interstate-5.

For the tourist, Springfield is found by driving south on Interstate-5 for 106 miles from Portland, Oregon. When you come to I-5 Exit 194 turn east and you will find yourself in Springfield.

Springfield is also 194 miles north of the Oregon / California State Line. Springfield is close to recreation, it is about 60 miles from the Pacific Ocean beaches and 60 miles from the Cascade Mountains. Oregon Highway-126 travels up through the McKenzie River Valley with all its recreational opportunities.

A little Springfield History

Elias M Briggs and his wife Mary were the first settlers in Springfield. They were recent arrivals over the “Southern Route” past Klamath Lake, over the Cascade Mountains and into the Rogue Valley in southern Oregon, and then north into the Willamette in 1849. They built a house near a babbling spring.

Not long after building his home he fenced his homestead, enclosing the spring and field around it. The homestead soon became known as the Spring Field, the city’s name was cast. He later developed the town of Springfield in a meadow near his homestead.

Springfield is known as a mill town. Soon after its beginning local entrepreneurs built canals to bring water power to the community and built flour and lumber mills. Springfield was incorporated as a city in 1885.

Springfield Today

Today Springfield has a population of over 50,000 and lies 456 feet above sea level. Springfield’s western border is Interstate-5 and its north and south borders are the McKenzie River on the north and Willamette River on the south.

On the west side of Interstate-5, opposite Springfield, is Eugene Oregon with a population of over 130,000. Springfield and Eugene are in Lane County which has a population of over 240,000. Eugene is the largest and Springfield is the second largest city in Lane County.
