Visitor information
about the Charleston, OR area.
Charleston, Oregon is located on the Southern Oregon Coast west of
Coos Bay, Oregon.
Charleston probably
would win the award for “most missed city on the Oregon Coast.” That is probably because Charleston is
about 2 miles west of US-101.
Getting There
If entering the Bay
Area from the north on US-101 you will first cross a small bridge over Coos
Bay then you go a whole 0.4 mi. on land before crossing the magnificent
McCullough Bridge over Coos Bay.
Then travel another 2.3 mi. south along Coos Bay through North Bend.
Close to the Casino
on US-101, just south of the North Bend / Coos Bay boundary line you will
find Newmark Street. Turn right
(west) on Newmark and go all the way to the west (2.9 mi.) and then the
street turns to the left.
Travel south for
about 7.9 mi. along another shore of Coos Bay and the road will turn west
again and go over another bridge over an arm of Coos Bay called the South
Slough that heads south from the entrance of Coos Bay from the Pacific
Ocean.
When you’ve crossed
the bridge you are in Charleston.
Turn right to see the activities along the port area. You’ll find the Charleston Visitors
Center on the right.
Oregon’s Bay Area
consists of the cities of North Bend, Coos Bay, and Charleston. The Bay Area is 234 miles south of
Portland via Interstate-5, OR-126, and US-101. It is 110 miles from the California State
Line via The Pacific Coast Scenic Byway, US-101 and about 112 miles from
Eugene.

Charleston is an
unincorporated community that lies west of the City of Coos Bay on the Cape
Arago Highway. It is the commercial
and sport fishing capital of the area.
Its port facility on the south slough near the harbor opening into
the Pacific is home to the entire commercial and sport fishing fleet in the
area.
You will find the
docks, restaurants, gift shops, and other points of interest in this area.
Don’t make the
mistake of stopping here. The rest
of the Cape Arago highway has a lot to offer in the way of parks and
viewpoints.
