Gold Beach, Oregon is located on the Southern Oregon
Coast on the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway, US Highway-101.
When you see this
sign you know you are on the right road.
The Pacific Coast Scenic Byway is famous for its bridges. Don’t miss seeing the architecture and
engineering of these famous bridges.
Gold Beach is located at the outlet of the wild and
famous Rogue River where it meets the Pacific Ocean.
About
¼ of the Oregon Coast is in Curry County.
Gold Beach is just about in the middle of Curry County. The majority of the County is in the
Siskiyou National Forest which is in the Coastal Mountain Range. The Rogue River runs back into the
Coastal Mountain Range and the Siskiyou National Forest.
America’s Wild Rivers Coast
The
Rogue River is the first river to be designated one of America’s Wild Rivers. There are now 8 rivers on over 100 miles
of Pacific Coast in Southern Oregon and Northern California that make up
the America’s Wild Rivers Coast.

Jet Boat tours
of the Rogue River
You can take jet
boat tours from Gold Beach up the Rogue River. The tour operators offer different trips
up the river from 52 miles to the end of the navigable portion of the river
for jet boat down to 32 miles up the river.
The operators of these water jet boats take you on a sometimes wild
ride up the river through some of the greatest scenery in the world through
both smooth water and wild rapids.
There is more information about Jet Boat tours below.
Myrtlewood
Myrtlewood
(Umbellularia californica) grows here.
When in the open it looks more like a bush but in the forest it
grows straight and tall. Myrtlewood
grows very slowly, a 4’ diameter tree may be 500 years old.
Local shops sell a
variety of unique products such as bowels, trivets, chopping blocks, and more
made from this unique wood. Some
shops give tours of their woodshop.

Tidepools
If you are a first
time ocean visitor you will want to join us old time ocean visitors and
search the tide pools. A bare sandy
beach doesn’t supply much sea life to observe but tide pools are another
matter.
Watching sea life
in tide pools is tide dependent, it need to be low, around 0.0 feet. You will need to check local tide tables
for the times the tide is low. If there
are no low tides there are usually some tide pools in many inter-tidal
areas at 2 to 3 foot tides.
We’ve listed some
places below under “Recommended Tide pool locations”
Sport Fishing
The Rogue River is
world famous for its Steelhead and Salmon fishing. The Rogue also has fisheries in Sturgeon,
Trout, Shad, and other fish.
|
|
There are several
guide services in the area that will take you fishing and share their
expertise with you. There is almost
not time of the year that you can’t catch some species.
If it is ocean
fishing you are looking for the deep sea fishing is very good here too and
there are several charter boats that offer excellent trips.
Whale Watching
Visit this area in
the late Fall or Winter and you will see whales. Nearly 23,00 grey whales migrate south
past this area from their summer feeding grounds to the north. They also make the trek north from Baja,
California in the spring.
|

Approaching town from the north you will see this sign and the bridge
over the Rogue River.
|
|
Look for the “Whale
Watching Spoken Here” signs along the coast. Volunteers at these locations will help
you find the whales and explain their migratory habits.
Ride Horses on the Beach
or on the Ranch
If you like riding
horses, look 11 miles south of Gold Beach for Hawk’s Rest Ranch at Siskiyou
West. Experienced guides will lead
you through
|
private pasture land, sand dunes, and ocean
beach. There is nothing like riding
horses on the beach.
If you would rather see a canyon with a trail up
the peaceful valley along a creek to a mountain top overlooking the Rogue
River far below they can also accommodate you too. There is more information below under
listed attractions.
